European Journal features U of M journalism professor’s lecture at Germany’s ZDF studios

University of Memphis faculty member speaks at Newseum

Tom Hrach was one of the panelists on the March 1 anniversary of the Kerner Report.

Journalism and Strategic Media faculty member Tom Hrach was one of the featured panelists on March 1 at the Newseum in Washington DC as part of a discussion of the 50th anniversary of the Kerner Commission.

Hrach is the author of “The Riot Report and the News: How the Kerner Commission Changed the Reporting of Black America.” The Kerner Commission Report was issued on March 1, 1968.

The panel was led by Newseum CEO Gene Policiniski, and it was broadcast on the Newseum’s inhouse television network.

The latest issue of Historiography in Mass Communication featured an interview with Tom Hrach about his book “The Riot Report and the News.”

The online publication is dedicated to the study of journalism history and the methods used to study journalism history. The interview was conducted by editor David Sloan for the winter 2018 edition of the publication.

Journalism Historians Association names “The Riot Report and the News” top book of 2016

logo_smallThe American Journalism Historians Association has selected Thomas J. Hrach as the winner of its 2017 Book of the Year Award for his 2016 work, “The Riot Report and the News: How the Kerner Commission Changed Media Coverage of Black America.”

Hrach received his award and discussed his research during a special session at the 36th annual AJHA Convention conducted on Oct. 12 to 14 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

“I am honored and grateful that my colleagues who study journalism history have chosen to recognize my work,” Hrach said. “I have enjoyed being a member of the AJHA and the support I have received from the members is appreciated.”

Chapter 16 features interview and info about ‘The Riot Report and the News’

logoChapter 16, a literary website for Tennessee writers and readers, featured an interview with Tom Hrach about his book “The Riot Report and the News.”

The interview appeared on the site on Aug. 25, and it appeared in The Commercial Appeal on Sept. 3. To read the interview, click here.

 

 

Journalism Historians name Riot Report and the News the 2016 book of the year

HRACH cov1The American Journalism Historians Association has named Thomas J. Hrach’s The Riot Report and the News: How the Kerner Commission Changed Media Coverage of Black America as the 2016 Book of the Year.

The award will be presented at the group’s national convention in October 2017 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The American Journalism Historians Association Book of the Year Award recognizes the best book in journalism history or mass media history published during the previous calendar year.

Hrach’s book was published by the University of Massachusetts Press. The award has been presented every year since 2001, and previous recipients have included such notable works as The Race Beat, which won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for history.

Barnes & Noble 10th Annual Author Festival

barnes-and-noble-logoThe Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Wolfchase Mall in Memphis is conducting a book author event that will include ‘The Riot Report and the News.’

The event is from 1 to 4 p.m., June 10. It is the 10th Annual Author Festival. Nine authors will be participating. This is a chance for people to meet the authors, pick up their books in the store and have copies signed.

Each author will give a 20-minute presentation during the event. Included will be Tom Hrach author of “The Riot Report and the News” along with fellow University of Memphis Journalism and Strategic Media faculty member Otis Sanford, author “From Boss Crump to King Willie.”

 

NED Talk at the University of Memphis Libraries

The Ned McWherter Library on the campus of the University of Memphis launched a new series called NED Talks in the spring of 2017. The goal is to highlight research from Memphis faculty members.
